It does not matter if you come from first, second, or third-generation migrant families. Whether your history is rooted in stories of former colonies, diasporas, or refugee contexts. What connects us is the shared experience of living as trans people in societies where we are seen as ‘the stranger’ . Not just for our gender identity, but also for our cultural identity. Being our authentic self can put us at a disadvantage. 

Having to face transphobia and xenophobia, experiencing racism and other -isms impacts us in many ways. “-Isms”, like racism, ageism, sexism and ableism, are all forms of prejudice, conscious or unconscious. They reinforce inequality in our society. Navigating the hurdles of inequality takes a lot. If you don’t have generations before you to explain how to overcome these challenges, care may seem impossible.

As trans community, we proudly share our resilience. If we can’t rely on generations of biological family, at least we can rely on generations of trans elders and rolemodels. People who have walked the path we still need to take. Finding community means findings care. Thats what Trans United Europe hopes to achieves as their core mission. Uniting in care, led by trans people.
